RESIDENTIAL PORTFOLIO
Private Residence
Northwest Washington, D.C.
|
|
Built
on a non-conforming, 35-foot wide lot in Northwest Washington,
D.C., this house required massive renovation after a fire. This
sunny rear addition includes the upstairs master bedroom and the
downstairs family room, which leads to the patio.

“Before”
– The original 1 ½ story bungalow, just 21 feet wide,
after a fire nearly destroyed it. Construction was permitted only
if this original structure was retained, so Bass Architects designed
a unique split level floor plan that incorporated the old house.

Sunlight
floods the family room thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows that also
seamlessly unite the indoor and outdoor spaces. The elimination
of interior corridors opens the main living spaces across the width
of the house, and rooms flow together.

 |
| A
skylight inserted into the center of the house brings more natural
light into what was once a dark hallway. The open floor plan, light
colors and light from windows at three levels give this house a sense
of spaciousness despite its small size. |
