RELIGIOUS PORTFOLIO
Masjid
Bait Ur Rehman Mosque
Silver Spring, Maryland
|
|
The
Mosque is situated on a parcel of ten acres in rural Montgomery
County, Maryland, outside Washington, D.C. Complex site-planning
issues included widening the road, providing a storm water management
facility, and relocating existing utilities. |
|
 |
The
basis for the design of the Mosque is the requirement the Mehrab (front)
side face in the direction Mecca.
Thus, rather than an orientation which is orthogonal (at right angles)
to the site, all development is related to Quibla, or the direction
of prayer. Bass Architects was chosen for the job not only for its
architectural expertise but also for the firm’s reputation for
cultural and religious sensitivity. |
|
 |
| As
a center for prayer, administration and social functions, the Mosque
has been designed to conform to the liturgical and social traditions
of the Islamic faith, and to grow in phases as the population and
resources of the congregation expand. |
|
 |
| Balancing
traditional design with modern needs, Bass designed the Mosque to
echo its ancient ancestry while comfortably serving its diverse congregation.
The building is clad in architectural precast concrete trimmed by
a light green slate and features a traditional Dome and Minaret, both
of which are clad in stainless steel, that give the facility an imposing
yet majestic silhouette. |
