Roger W. Bass, AIA
President

Award-winning architect Roger Bass has an outstanding record of successful design, management and technical coordination of numerous major projects for a 30-year career. Residents of the Washington area and its visitors from around the world will recognize some of his leading projects, including the InterAmerican Development Bank (1300 New York Avenue), the McLean Hilton, Bishop Ireton and Bishop McNamara high schools, the Grand Hotels, Calvary Church of the Nazarene in Annandale, and numerous other commercial, educational, religious and residential buildings.

Bass has managed a number of critical assignments such as the preliminary design studies for the Washington Dulles International Airport Terminal Expansion, where he balanced the beloved design of legendary Eero Saarinen with the airport’s need to drastically expand capacity. He also was the architect for the Titan 34D and Space Shuttle Launch Complex at Cape Canaveral, Florida, and he won an Award of Excellence from the Northern Virginia Chapter of the National Association of Industrial and Office Parks for the Northpointe Research & Development Park. He is highly regarded in the field of religious architecture, and has designed more than a dozen houses of worship, including a synagogue and a mosque. But his playful side emerges in commercial projects such as a brightly colored car wash and a high-tech fast-food restaurant.

Prior to founding Bass Architects Chartered in 1986, he was an Associate with Skidmore Owings and Merrill for six years. Previously he worked for two other architectural firms and was a Senior planner for Metro Dade County (Florida). He currently teaches at Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia, and he previously taught at Miami-Dade Community College.

Bass received his Master of Architecture degree from the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University, and his BA from the University of Rochester. He is a member of the American Institute of Architects, is certified by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards, and holds individual Architectural Registration in Florida, Georgia, Maryland, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Virginia and the District of Columbia. He is also an ICC Certified Building Plans Reviewers, a Licensed Class A General Contractor (Virginia) and a Licensed Contractor (Maryland and the District of Columbia).
